Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), named after the famous Tamil Scholar Professor P. Sundaram Pillai, was established on 7 September, 1990 to cater to the long felt needs of the people of the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu. The University has under its jurisdiction 61 affiliated colleges, 5 Mano Colleges and 1 Constituent College, with 65,000 students on rolls.

The University Grants Commission, New Delhi, an apex higher education body of the Union Government, has accorded its approval for getting financial assistance since 29 March 1994. The University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India with five star status. The University Act authorizes the functioning of Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education outside the university jurisdiction and the courses offered through this mode are recognized by the Distance Education Council (DEC) of India.

Punjab Technical University (PTU) has been established by an act of the State Legislature to promote Technical, Management & Professional education at the degree level & above. Under Section 3 of the University Act, the Punjab Technical University is authorized to Institute & confer Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates & academic distinction. The nomenclature of all the courses is as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) norms mentioned in Section 22 of UGC Act. The university is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities. Thus the degrees and diplomas given by the Punjab Technical University stands recognized by other University on a reciprocal basic. All colleges/institutes affiliated to Punjab Technical University offering professional Post Graduate Degrees have the approval of AICTE, New Delhi .
